Offshore wind farms to boost civil engineering recruitment
The Crown Estate, owner of the UK's coastal sea beds, has granted energy companies rights to undertake construction work on up to 6,400 new wind turbines across nine coastal zones, with the capacity to generate 32 gigawatts of electricity between them.
It is expected that this investment in wind farms could be worth £75 billion in total and will produce around 70,000 new jobs by 2020, including a new increase in civil engineering recruitment.
Energy and climate change secretary Ed Miliband commented: "Our island has one of the best wind energy resources in Europe and today's news shows that there's a huge appetite for capacity to be built here.
"We now need to make sure we're poised to harness the potential that appetite brings for business for UK companies and new green jobs."
The chief executive of the Engineering Construction Industry Training Board, David Edwards, told the Financial Times last week that 44,000 new civil engineering jobs would be created by 2016-17 through energy producing developments such as this.
